Virginia Beach's warm, humid summers and mild winters create ideal conditions for several serious tree diseases. Early identification is critical β many diseases are treatable if caught in time, but fatal if left untreated.
A fungal disease (Bretziella fagacearum) that clogs the vascular system of oak trees. Symptoms include rapid browning and leaf drop in summer, progressing from the crown down. Spread by sap-feeding beetles and root grafts. Treatment: systemic fungicide injection in early stages. Prevention: never prune oaks AprilβJuly.
Caused by Hypoxylon atropunctatum, this fungus attacks stressed oaks and other hardwoods. Appears as silver-gray patches under peeling bark. Typically fatal once advanced. There is no cure β affected trees should be removed to prevent spread.
Also called 'honey fungus,' this soil-borne disease attacks the root system of many tree species. Signs include dieback, yellow foliage, and honey-colored mushrooms at the base in fall. Trees can die suddenly. Remove affected trees and avoid replanting susceptible species in the same spot.
A relatively new pest in Hampton Roads, this white waxy insect clusters on bark and produces black sooty mold. Weakens trees and looks unsightly. Treatment: insecticidal soap wash + systemic soil drench with dinotefuran or imidacloprid in spring.
Multiple species of bark beetle attack stressed or declining loblolly pines. Look for small holes in bark with pitch tubes, reddish-brown foliage, and sawdust. By the time symptoms are visible, the tree is usually beyond saving and should be removed promptly to prevent spread.
